Things to do in Lanesborough

The Town of Lanesborough hosts the visitors’ center and southern entrance for Mount Greylock State Reservation, where visitors begin the popular drive to the summit of the tallest mountain in Massachusetts. Pontoosuc Lake, a 511-acre great pond, is stocked with trout in the spring, and larger Northern Pike have established a breeding population in the lake. Boat rentals are available. The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail is a 10-foot-wide paved multi-use and accessible trail with several access points in Lanesborough. Popular with walkers, runners, bikers, rollerbladers, dog walkers, and families with young children, the trail provides a safe corridor away from vehicular traffic. Balance Rock Trail at the northern end of Pittsfield State Forest in Lanesborough allows visitors to marvel at a glacial erratic boulder left behind during the last ice age. Estimated at 165 tons, this huge boulder is balanced on a single point and seems as if a strong breeze might knock it over. The area is also popular with OHV/ORV operators who come to ride the Skyline Trail and other ORV trails. A bit more than 2.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail passes through the community.
